Astragalus (Huang Qi) 

The name astragalus serves as both a botanical generic name and an English common name for the Chinese medicinal plant known as huang-qi, which is used in numerous Chinese prescriptions. Astragalus is especially useful for strengthening the body against viral infections of the respiratory tract and heart through stimulation of interferon production in the body.

Cautions: Ashwaganda might lower Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure, so it can contridict with any medications involved with the two. Being a herb that makes the immune system more active it could increase the symptoms of Auto-Immune disease. Stop taking two weeks before surgery being that Ashwaganda can conflict with Anesthesia drugs. This herb increases Thyroid Hormone levels and can effect any drug regimine involved with the Thyroid. Do not use Ashwaganda if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Antidiabetic- Studies show its ability to relieve insulin resistance and treat diabetes naturally. The herb’s collection of saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides all are effective in treating and regulating type 1 and 2 diabetes. They’re able to increase insulin sensitivity, protect pancreatic beta cells (the cells in the pancreas that produce and release insulin) and also act as anti-inflammatories in areas related to diabetes symptoms.

Astrgalus' antifivral capabilities, it has long been used to treat common colds and the flu. It's commonly combined with other herbs like Ginseng, Angelica and Licorice. As with many other natural cold remedies, it seems to work better when healthy individuals use the supplement ahead of the flu season to prevent the illness before it happens. 

The flavonoids present in astragalus are antioxidants that help prevent plaque buildup in arteries and narrowing of vessel walls by protecting the inner wall of the vessel. In addition in the Chinese Journal of Integrative. Medicine suggests injection of Astragalus, combined with conventional treatment for viral myocarditis, makes treatment more successful in heart conditions.

Patients receiving chemotherapy to recover more quickly and extend their life spans. Early research suggests its ability to reduce these symptoms and increase the efficacy of the chemotherapy treatments.
